Krka National Park & Skradin

The old port of Skradin lies up the Krka river from Sibenik and can be reached by sea or by road. It is an important ancient trading post for Croatia being well protected by the fortified entrance to the river at Sibenik.

From Skradin the visitor to Krka Falls takes a boat up river to where there are a variety of opportunities. You can just admire the magnificent falls from the lower level or you can explore the circular pathways through the lush vegetation around the falls and climb up to the highest level.

A boat leaves from Krka up to Visovac Island which is a visual and sensual treat being a Franciscan Monastery dating from 1576 on its own tiny island. The religious use of Visovac island began at the turn of the 15th century when it was used as a hermitage. Franciscan monks soon arrived, building a church in 1576 which was reconstructed in the 18th century. From the 16th to 19th centuries, the monastery amassed a rich collection of paintings, and don't miss the rare illustrated copy of Aesop's fables which was printed in 1487. It's one of only three in the world.
